Have you noticed this too?

Two of you in the same office are checking your website’s rankings in Google for a particular key phrase. Perhaps one of you is double-checking the other’s work because the position for this month looks suspiciously different to the one for last month. Very quickly, you realise that, while your results show the website’s home page at position 6 and the Landing Page for that key phrase at position 7, your co-worker’s browser has the home page at position 2 and the Landing Page a couple pages back.

Just because Halloween is round the corner, doesn’t mean that we’ve gone all black hat on you. We’re just feeling a little sneaky as of late, and wanted to share a tactic with you, which may be considered by some to be a little on the naughty side.

What are One-Box Results?

Question:

Hello LeadGenerators,

You have a reputation as internet marketing experts so I wondered if you could answer a tricky question. I run a website that specialises in cheap flights and while conducting keyword research on flights from Seattle we found that many of the keywords that people were searching for were phrases like Seattle to New York, or Seattle to Chicago. Someone in our office said that these were typical one-box results and therefore we shouldn’t bother optimising for them. I didn’t want this person to think that I didn’t know what one-box results were, so I’m afraid that I simply agreed with him and suggested that we concentrate on Seattle flights phrases instead. Oh dear LeadGenerators, did I do the right thing? And what exactly are one-box results?

The following is based on a real conversation:

FABIO: Dash it all, Chris, old chap, I’m quite confounded indeed. Why have you been playing online games all day? Do some work for a change.

CHRIS: This is work! Understanding game mechanics is developing into a large part of understanding social media.

FABIO: Your idea intrigues me, and I wish to know more. Explain.
