What is more important is choosing which keyword battles you wish to fight. Let’s choose the example of a company selling holidays in the Caribbean . A good position for ‘holiday Caribbean ’ or ‘cruise Caribbean ’ is not as impressive as it may first appear, as the traffic here does not tend to convert well. We classify these as less targeted keywords. They generally deliver lots of time-consuming, expensive and low converting traffic.
Conversely, if you sign up with a disreputable SEO company, then you might find you have the number one position in Google… for terms such as ‘ Caribbean city great february 2005 splash’, which are of no use to anyone. If no-one’s searching on the term, then there’s no benefit to appearing top of the tree for it.
The best SEO companies will be able to find you more targeted keywords that holidaymakers are searching for, but which many of your competitors are not pursuing, such as ‘antigua sailing’ or ‘martinique charter yacht’.
The best news is that more targeted traffic tends to convert at very profitable rates!
Hope this was of help,
Huw
